From one extreme to the other. Two weeks ago I was freezing my tits off neck deep in a river and mud at the Toughest, last Sunday I was rapidly being sun-fried on the streets of Hackney.
It was my third Hackney Half Marathon, and me and that race just don’t get along. This race always happens to be on a really hot day and I don’t like running when it’s hot. In fact, when the sun starts blazing every spring/summer and all the hibernating summer-only-runners come out, I do the opposite – I run a lot less.
I ran with my Camelbak that had a couple of Nuun tablets in the water but after half an hour, sipping on warm sweet water became a bit nauseating. I knew from 3km onwards that this was going to be a slow race. From then on, my pace got slower and slower and slower and slower every km until the end.
The crowds were great but I knew the course and dreaded the final few miles through the Olympic park – there’s no freaking shade there and the sun reflects off the yellow surroundings. That’s the point in the race people started dropping off like flies, thankfully there seemed to be plenty of St.John’s ambulance people around.
I finished in 1:52:29, which is 10 minutes slower than my PB but a minute faster than my PW so all’s well ;)
I’m not signing up for Hackney again. Unless they change it to February or March.
My next half marathon is on Wimbledon Common in June and then Ealing in September, which is my absolute favourite.
