I have always wanted to visit Iceland and now I finally have. I am totally NOT a cold weather / snow person, but I have always wanted to see Iceland. It’s such a quirky far-away island with fascinating history, language and weird/amazing geologically active landscape.
We stayed at an Airbnb in Reykjavik for 6 days, saw a lot of Reykjavik but also did two day-trips and spent one day in the Blue Lagoon. The boys have not seen snow this year so they were overjoyed to play in the snow, especially since the sun was shining bright and it wasn’t cold at all.
I tried to get a bit of a tan but being so far up north, that didn’t happen :)
In addition to breathtaking mountains and beautiful snow, there are hot springs and geysers (and volcanoes but we didn’t go see those as we saw them in Lanzarote last year ;).
The city of Reykjavik is small but full of colourful houses, cozy independent cafes with great coffee (no Starbucks or Costa or any other chains), restaurants with international, local and Scandinavian food. Everyone speaks fluent English and the money is crazy – a lunch for a group of 5 easily cost 15,000 Icelandic krona and I still don’t have a clue how much that is.
And did I mention the mountains are breathtaking?
And the hot water that comes out of the ground makes awesome pools. We went swimming on most days, the water is so warm that no one minds when air temperature is 5C. The kids played in the water as merrily as if they had been in Australia or Lanzarote while we did 1.5 – 2km worth of 50m laps – a nice change from our usual 20m pool.
I didn’t do any running, every night I was absolutely exhausted from all the walking, swimming and Crossfit. I slept like a teenager (having had babies I will never use the phrase ‘slept like a baby’) for a week, had a lot of good fish, beer and Skyr, and will go back to work tomorrow with a big smile on my face.
Oh, and after landing backin Lonon on Friday I did a little Crossfit comp on Saturday, which was pretty awesome, and I ran a 10k race today where I came 4th. So I’m a little bit tired but man – what a good week off from work.
P.S. Lots of travel photos on my Instagram.
