Just the other day, barely back from holidays, as soon as I opened the door after work the boys ran up to me and started bombarding me with various requests:

Can you set up my YouTube account? When can we film my first video? Can you change my skins on Minecraft? Can you download Fraps so I can record myself playing Minecraft? The new laptop is glitching again, I can’t turn it off. Can you find some duct tape because I NEED to make a duct tape hat? I did not find my sports bag at school, it’s just not there, it HAS to be at home! Can you find my green light sabre? My phone battery died, where is my charger? Can I just relax for a bit before doing homework? Can I have a cuddle? No, I need a cuddle! I am still really hungry! I want dessert!

All that before I could even take off my shoes.

Most evenings I manage to make myself something to eat despite all of the above (the boys eat earlier with my mom and I eat different stuff anyway – just quick protein + veg most of the time) and then I need to hassle the oldest to go and do his homework.  The school keeps saying that parents need to sit with the older kids for an hour each night and help them prepare for their senior school exams but I don’t have the time/energy/motivation to do that every night so I leave him to his own devices.

The little one usually has reading to do and twice a week some homework, he’s the one I need to supervise.

An hour later I run a bath for the boys, supervise their teeth brushing and read to them for about half an hour. There are often a few tantrums/disagreements or at least endless negotiations in between every procedure (between the boys and/or between me and one of the boys).

Once the little one’s asleep I let the oldest get on the computer to play games if he’s done his homework/exam prep.

I spend the next hour or two in the kitchen – getting their lunches ready for the next day, getting my own breakfast and lunch ready for the next day, cooking dinner for the next day if there are no left overs or anything in the freezer, tidying up, making mess, tidying up.

MrB comes home sometime between 8 and 9, grabs whatever food is left for dinner. We go through a quick kiss and a hug and “How was your day?”, followed by our to-do list for the week – when is an electrician coming to fix a light, when is the locksmith coming to fix the lock, when is the gardener coming for a chat, when are various events for the boys at school, who is out on what night (work related stuff usually), who is off early on what morning for Crossfit (meaning the other one has to finalise the boys lunches in the morning), etc. etc. etc.

THIS is how sexy and exciting married life is when you’ve been together for 17 years and have a couple of kids.

9pm-ish I make myself some tea, try to not to snack (too much) and watch some TV, often being on the computer at the same time – checking blogs, writing posts, checking emails (most of them from school :|), writing all the school related stuff in my diary. Between 9:30 and 10 I finish up, pack my clothes and my gym gear for the next day and I’m in bed by about 10:30 every night.

If I’m not having a bout of insomnia, I fall asleep within half an hour, if my mind’s racing it can take a couple of hours. I wake up at 5:45 once a week when I go to 7am Crossfit and 6:30 rest of the days, on those days I’m dressed and out the door within half an hour – I put on make-up but I never dry my hair. Ain’t nobody got time for that. Breakfast and coffee happen at work.

I’m in the office from 8 to 5:30 and most days I either run or go to Crossfit during lunchtime. I get home 6:15 and the kids pounce on me straight away again and the same old evening madness starts…

Wednesdays are my mid-week mental health days. I don’t work on those days and after walking the kids to school (while listening to their heated Minecraft related debate for 30 minutes which is oh-so mind-numbing), I go for a 10-12km run. That’s the best time of my Wednesdays – running and then heading home to an empty house, having a non-rushed shower, making myself a few strong coffees in quick succession and something for breakfast that is not my usual overnight oats or boiled eggs+veg and then I just sit at the computer and waste my time on Twitter or Facebook OR I install yet another new theme for my blog and customise that.

Once noon hits I need to get stuff done – food shopping, errands, etc. I don’t clean or iron, by the way, I have outsourced those tasks. Just like I’ve ‘outsourced’ the task of taking the kids to school and picking them up 4 times a week by my mother – the price being that I’m living with my mother. Living with your mother is just as easy as it sounds like. I’ll let you ponder that for a minute :)

At 3:30 I pick up the little one from school and we walk home, arriving shortly after 4. Then I cook dinner for everyone because I know that by the time the oldest gets home before 5pm, he’ll be starving.

And the evenings are just the same as any other evening – homework and endless tidying up after various crafting activities. That’s my own fault really as I don’t usually let them watch TV or use any other electronic equipment on school nights – with the exception for the oldest from 8-9 when his brother’s asleep and he’s done all his school work.

On weekends I sleep in until 7:30 or even 9:30 sometimes. MrB always gets up earlier to hang out with the boys, I still don’t know for sure if he really is a morning person (he’s an Aussie, so he could be) OR whether he actually loves me so much that he lets me sleep in every single weekend day.

On top of everything the darn kids want a pug and keep hassling me daily about it even though I keep saying "Boys - I DO NOT HAVE ANY FREAKING ENERGY FOR A DOG!"

So in a nutshell the main adjective that comes to mind when I think about myself on most days is “tired”. Exercise gives me temporary relief from that, not eating sugar gives me relief of actually feeling sleepy, especially in the afternoons like I used to feel. However, I feel really tired by the time I hit the bed every night and I know that my occasional insomnia is often related to just being overtired.

I think everything could be fixed if days would be made 2-3 hours longer and I’d get more sleep in the mornings (I have tried going to be earlier but I don’t ever fall asleep until after 11).

The chances of that happening, however, are about the same as the chances of my kids getting a pug.

Anyone else who’s got a lot to juggle – do you any “life hacks” that would lengthen my days to introduce me to?

    You get my vote for making the days 2-3hours longer!
    Glad it’s not just me who leaves the house with wet hair in the morning! I tend to turn the blowers in the car up on full and trick myself into believing I’m blow drying my hair. When I get to work I quickly plait it while I’m waiting for the computers to start up. My top ‘life hack’ is on the days where I need to look more presentable, I’ll wash my hair the previous night, run straighteners over it in the morning, throw a jumper over my shirt and then use the warm straighteners to ‘iron’ the collar of my shirt. Ain’t nobody got time for ironing! ;)
    I’m not sure I could fit life in around two kids as well. Your days are so jam packed!

      I don’t even own clothes that need ironing! :P I like the tip of drying the hair the night before but I often go to Crossfit at 7am so there is no point :|

    Thanks for posting this! M and I are amazed at how you two fit in so much. It gives us hope that one day we might be able to do the same :)

      We fit in so much but we’re always so tired and on Friday nights we think it’s the best thing ever to go to bed at 9. Rock’n’roll life! :)

    Sounds manic like my day, I get up 5.15am to walk our Labrador so if you not mad about dog yourself don’t go down the dog owners way. And then I go to 6.30am crossfit class to get back 7.50 have the fastest shower ever same time shouting to my son to get ready to walk out the door to take him to my mother in law who’ll send him to school and then drive to work by 9 am. I must say, when my daughter started secondary school she become almost independent and organizing her own day as long I feed her :) I don’t do much tiding during the week so we live in a mess, even I hate it but as you said there is only certain amount hours in a day!

      I am not bothered by mess usually but if I don’t tidy up at least a little bit then my mother will be bothered by it and she’ll shove things into the most random places and then forget where she put everything :|

    I feel really bad reading this… because I don’t even have children and feel exactly the same way!! Some extra hours would be awesome… and even though I have the weekends off, they just seem to be filled with chores/errands. I definitely haven’t found the ‘me time’ yet (apart from the gym of course)

    The only thing I do is prep proats for breakfast for the working week, and lunches for the entire week too. I don’t think I’d be able to cope otherwise! I pre-plan ALL of our dinners as well, so I don’t get home and have to worry about thinking of what to cook.

    Other than that – I don’t think there are many more hacks out there :-(

      I could probably get a bit better when it comes to food prep but the thing is that a family of 5 eats a LOT and even when it seems I’ve prepared a lot of food for the week then by Wednesday the fridge is empty again :| Thankfully MrB cooks a lot during weekends so all I do then is prep my own stuff for the week.
