The Crossfit Open – loving the new challenge

I wasn’t going to do it but then on Wednesday night, the day before the first workout was announced, I did it – I signed up for the Crossfit Open. The Crossfit Games season begins each year with The Open – anyone can sign up to compete in five workouts over five weeks and post their scores online. The best in each region then go to compete at the Regionals and the winners go to compete in the Crossfit Games in California.

In previous years I have not signed up because the workouts are just way too hard. This year, however, they have a scaled option. That means I can do all workouts safely and ‘compete’ as such with everyone else who is doing the scaled version of the open.

Last night was 15.1 – that means the first workout of the 2015 season. It was split into two parts and the scaled version was:

Workout 15.1

9-minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible):
15 high knees
10 deadlifts – 25kg
5 snatches – 25kg

Workout 15.1a

1-rep-max clean and jerk
6-minute time cap

15point1 For some reason I was nervous as heck beforehand but I often am before challenging workouts and I know that once I start the butterflies in my stomach leave very fast.

I thought the high knees would be easy but after a few rounds my left hand grip was getting weaker and weaker and those high knees were not that easy anymore. 25kg deadlifts are dead easy, 25kg snatches are easy as well but combine them all and the hand grip and the forearms were painful already half way through.

With a great crew around me I finished 15.1 with 213 reps and went straight into the clean and jerks. I haven’t cleaned more than 50kg before so started with 35kg. Then did 45kg and then 50kg. I had a couple of minutes left so went straight to 55kg – nothing to lose at this point and no point in being too cautious as time was running out. I got the 55kg but didn’t finish it in perfect form so took a little break and went for 55kg again.  Amazingly those earlier butterflies must have transformed into adrenalin because even though my forearms were in spasms from 15.1, I did my second 55kg clean and jerk and finished strong.

I am so freaking chuffed that I was able to clean AND jerk 55kg!  That is a 5kg clean PB and a 10 freaking kg jerk PB :D

Happy. Freaking. Days.

The box was absolutely buzzing and the atmosphere was awesome. Crossfit and it’s people are the best.

This morning I’m still a bit high from all the PBs and had a great bouldering session with the usual double-unders and handstand practice thrown in. Who knows, maybe one day I will take part of the Open without having to scale the workouts. But even if I don’t, Crossfit is a whole lot of fun and I just love love love everything about it :)
