To keep running in the summer I might have to become a ninja

Wednesday, 9 July 2014

I’m a summer person. The hotter the better. I don’t mind sweating all day long and taking multiple showers a day. As soon as I don’t need to wear a jacket outside, I’m so happy I feel like skipping when I walk.

I don’t however like to run in the summer. The heat doesn’t bother me but during my last pregnancy I got hit by a bad case of melasma and now I need to keep my face out of the sun. Melasma, in case you haven’t heard, is when your face goes all sun-spotty in large patches during or after pregnancy due to hormones and sunshine.

My patches fade in the winter but as soon as the sun’s out again in the spring I’m all over my zinc oxide SPF 50. It works great in everyday situations but despite claiming to be water proof and a ‘sports’ sunblock, it does not work when running.

For running I’ve actually tried 568 different types and brands of sunblocks, all of which claim to be water & sweat proof. None of them work.

Lately I’ve been preferring Crossfit, bouldering and Bikram to running. Avoiding running makes me a little sad though because I do love it and I feel like I’m letting down my first love a little bit right now.

In thinking about this and trying to find a way to keep running in the summer, I may have found just the right thing – I think something like this under my cap could work very well:

What do you think – should I quit running until October or just start a new summer running trend?

[…] Last year when I was on holidays in Estonia I ran a lot. At least every other day for 4 weeks and at one point 8 days in a row. I usually don’t run that often so I ended up with that annoying nerve pain on the back of my left leg that took a year to overcome (stems from a worn disk in my lower back) and some major damage to my face (read my ninja post). I used to get these spots, and my friend with the same problem recommended No 7 Anti-Dark Spot Facial Sun Protection 50 (comes also in 30) and both are not spot free (tumedad laigud). The cream used to have subtle shimmer as well but now it is just normal white cream.

Haha amazing, I think you should definitely give it a try – Ninja runner sounds like a superhero!
I’ve been struggling running in the heat recently, and I’m pretty made for sunshine (dark complexion/ Mediterranean heritage).

Just now the weather’s turned – Ninja plans are on hold, I love running in the rain!

I think I need to design something lightweight like that. Might even make me rich! ;)
