The weather this week has been AMAZING. Everything in London is in full bloom and running in shorts and t-shirts is so freaking nice.
I started the week’s running with the long run on Wednesday as usual. After getting lost on Richmond Park a bit (that park is WAY bigger than I thought it was) I had to alter my route but I’ve crisscrossed the streets of SW London so many times before I know pretty much how many kms there are between any two points :)
It was a nice and uneventful run but I did regret afterwards that I was looking at my pace too much and didn’t just let myself plod slower. Next week is my last long run before Paris and I will make sure I don’t run it faster than 5:50-5:55. That is the pace I feel is good for me for a long run – it’s easy enough so that I can really enjoy the experience and marvel at the distances that my body is able to run (4 years ago I was one of those “I just cannot run” kinds of people).
I ended this week with a race on Wimbledon Common. I ran that race in June last year and PBd with 48:02. This year I finished in 47:11 and was the 3rd lady to cross the finish line! I’m totally stoked and I’m totally amazed that this body that’s given me so much grief over the years can do that!
The first two kilometres of that route are uphill so of course I was hating it that entire time, then it flattened out but my legs felt tired and my head kept telling me things like “oh you cannot expect a PB when you’re in marathon training and have already run 50km this week” and “oh you probably should not have done that speedy 6kms yesterday”…
As usual though I get in the groove and speed up after 5kms and it helped that the last 2kms were downhill with just the last few hundred metres on the flat again. That last sprint is so darn hard once there’s no more momentum from coming down the last hill but it’s only a short one.
Anyway, I have a new 10k PB and I’m happy! Even though Garmin said it wasn’t really 10kms :)
The training summary for the week:
- Monday: Rest
- Tuesday: Crossfit
- 34.14km at 5:45 min/km pace
- Thursday: 5.90km at 6:32 pace
- Friday: Crossfit
- Saturday: 6.45km at 4:556 pace
- 2.73km warm up at 5:24 pace
- 10k race that was 9.73 according to my Garmin at 4:51pace
- 1.19km run to the bus stop at 5:42 pace
Now that I only have one more long run left (36km this Wednesday) I’m almost starting to feel a bit sad that the madness of marathon training is soon over. I’m sure my husband and my children feel otherwise though – marathon training is very time consuming and I do feel it’s kind of a selfish thing to do when you have a family. The good thing is that I keep fit throughout the year so the mad marathon training period only lasts for 3 months.
And now – bring on more sunshine and week 12!
