Yes I eat all day long

Friday, 17 January 2014

In January of every year we’re all bombarded with articles about how to lose weight and what to eat and what not to eat and how much and how often, etc. etc. etc. Some ‘experts’ say it’s better to eat 3 proper meals and 2 small snacks a day, some say it’s better to eat 5 small meals a day, some say it’s better to fast every 3rd day, some say it’s better to fast from every lunchtime until the next breakfast.

Who is right?

The answer is nobody and everybody – what’s right is what is RIGHT FOR YOU.

As with so many other things, you do what feels good/right for you. You run if you like to run, you swim if you like to swim, you lift weights if that is what makes you feel good. You eat meat if that’s what you like, you are a vegetarian if that is what you like. You decide. Your body will tell you what is right for you.

I have figured out that my body likes to eat a smallish quantity of food every 2(ish) hours. I kept thinking that it looks a bit nuts to eat all.the.time, but when I’ve tried to eat a larger breakfast, lunch and dinner I just don’t feel well. I feel uncomfortably stuffed and by the end of the day I actually end up eating more than I should because I do like to snack as well.

The most recent Sunday Times had an article by yet another weight loss ‘guru’. Most of his tips were a bit lame but one actually made me think: “Every meal except breakfast should have more than one course. The palate likes variety.”

Last year's marathon training weeks looked like this.

Last year’s marathon training weeks looked like this.

I read that and realised that it was time for me to stop trying to eat “proper meals”. I like variety a lot and what’s more, I like to eat a little at a time. That is what makes me feel the best – never stuffed, never starving. Both being stuffed and feeling like I’m starving make me cranky hence there is also a mental health benefit for me in eating small meals.

If my colleagues start mocking me for chewing something every few hours I can always play the “I’m in marathon training” card ;)

Oh wow. I am way too lazy to that that often. And sometimes, I just like a plate full of (GOOD!) food :)

I think that you’re completely right! In weight loss there are so many ways to fail losing weight! My method was an anti-diet program, eat stop eat; I’m very happy with it!

Kust sa oma musklitele proteiini saad sellise menüüga? :)

About protein – the photo is from last year, I do eat more protein these days. I have some meat or a tin of mackerel or sardines every day, plus eggs and protein from the ‘weird’ things I eat like maca powder and chia seeds and tempeh, etc.

About feeling nauseous from eating sweet stuff – nope. I have a sweet tooth. I stay away from cane sugar because that makes me feel yuck but eating fruit or dates or raisins does not make me feel nauseous. I imagine it could though if I ate like 5 dates in one go :|

Mul on just vastupidi. :)

Mulle jah see tihedane soomine sobib ainult et vahel on raske ohtul millalgi see pidev naksimine ara lopetada :| But I never said I was perfect ;)
