What MrsB forgot

Thursday, 14 November 2013

I’m reading a great book at the moment called “What Alice forgot”. The premise of the story is that Alice hits her head and loses all of her memories from the past 10 years. I haven’t finished the book yet so I don’t know whether it has a happy ending or not but so far she isn’t liking very much the person she has become.

It’s a fun book to read but it’s also made me think about how my own self / life has changed in the past decade and how “me from 2003” would see my life as it is now.

I think if I woke up tomorrow and thought it was 14th of November 2003 –

I would be surprised that we have done another renovation

Renovation in November 2003 – I would be surprised that we have just done another renovation, except this time our house is 3 times bigger and we’ve paid someone else an astronomical amount of money to do all the work!!!

I would be surprised that I live in London and have two kids.
I would be surprised at how loud and exhausting they are.
I would be surprised at how funny they are.
I would be surprised that they are not blond (most Estonian kids are blond :).
I would be surprised that my stomach is flatter than ever.
I would be surprised that I can climb a rope, do a handstand and deadlift 90kg.
I would be surprised that I’ve run a marathon.
I would be surprised that I’ve become way more impatient and noise sensitive (see note above re loud kids).
I would be surprised that I no longer cycle at all. I would be surprised that I wear high heels to work on most days.
I would be surprised that I’ve never taken more than 11 months off from work for maternity leave – that I’ve never been a stay-at-home mom.
I would be surprised that I only own skinny jeans.
I would be surprised that I have so many wrinkles.
I would be surprised that I have a tattoo.
I would be surprised that I don’t have a daughter.
I would be surprised that I find motherhood tiring.
I would be surprised that my house is a mess.
I would be surprised that it doesn’t really bother me.
I would be surprised that I don’t eat sugar or dairy.
I would be surprised that I’ve actually become the kind of person I always envied – the kind that eats a lot of vegetables and is able to say no to food that they know they cannot moderate (= eat in small quantities).

None of these surprises I would describe as negative or positive – they are just something that would make me think “Oh! This is interesting!”

As for what wouldn’t surprise me – I would not be surprised that I’m still married – I always knew the Mr was a keeper. Also I would not be surprised at what I do for living – I loved the area I work in already then.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and have forgotten everything that happened in the last 10 years of your life. Would you be surprised at what you see around you – who you’ve become, who are the people who are in your life?

What a great post!! Made me think!

I think I would be surprised that … I’m 5 stone lighter, have a 4 year old girl who is my world, that I love running with a passion, that I need time on my own and have a phone that can surf the internet, track my runs, show me emails, photos and videos … but I use it mainly for talking to runners on Twitter and taking run pics!

Where to start? Actually, I too would be surprised to be living in London. That said, I think that, overall, I would be happy with my new life. That said, I would be surprised that my stomach is a lot less flat. Sigh…
