Life. Be fit for it.

Thursday, 3 October 2013

We’ve recently joined a fitness centre whose motto is “Life. Be fit for it”. I totally love it as I already tend to answer questions of “What are you training for?” when people see me in my running or Crossfit gear with: “Life!”.

I am the happiest and feel the best in my skin when I move a lot. I am postponing re-learning to drive again with the excuse of then running the risk of becoming lazy and not walking everywhere anymore ;)

We got a family membership to that centre with the great motto to enable everyone to move more – my mother now goes swimming on most days after she drops the boys off, she takes the 4-year old swimming on Fridays as he finishes at 12:30 on those days, the whole family goes swimming on Saturday and Sunday nights, I have been going swimming on Wednesdays and Sunday mornings and once I tried out the gym and did hill repeats on a ‘dread’mill.

The boys totally love it, the 4-year old has learned to swim unaided in the last 2 weeks. The 8-year old gets to practice his swimming in a nice warm environment – they go swimming at school every week but he says that pool is freezing and he isn’t enjoying it that much.

I have done three long swimming sessions on my own now and after plucking up the courage to put on a pair of goggles and put my head under water, swimming is actually kind of fun.  An hour passes by and I could keep going back and forth, back and forth. It’s like some kind of repetitive meditation. I find now that as soon as I open the door to the swimming pool, the smell of the water switches on the happy switch in my head.

So I spend a lot of my time either running or at Crossfit or at yoga or now swimming but somehow I don’t feel like I need to justify myself for doing those things – they make me happy and when I’m 80 I’m pretty sure I am not going to look back at my life and think “I should have worked 5 days a week and not 4.” or “I should have cleaned my house a bit more.”

Oh my goodness I absolutely LOVE that motto! I’ve been desperate to start getting fit again (no exercise for over 3 years is not good. My heart hurts when I walk up stairs!) Now that my daughter is at nursery I might start slowly with a bit of yoga in the mornings, but it’s the cardio stuff that I really love :)

I think yoga and walking will be a good start. I had 4 years in between my kids when I didn’t do much :| (other than trying to get pregnant but that’s a whole another long story :), it’s nice to move again and try different things. I might even one day end up liking Zumba!

I have never had a swimming lesson and maybe I should have one. My daughters are swimming so much better than me!

My tagline for my business is “feeling fit for life” it’s something I really like that it’s ok to exercise for health rather train specifically for an event or certain sport. I see these posters around the internet asking if people exercise or do they TRAIN? As long as it gets people moving who cares.

Doing things that make you happy is an important part of life, the fact it’s mostly exercise which will make you be healthy is a bonus :)
